Things to consider

Two questions

First question: do you like God? Good biblical Christians usually answer with the 1st Commandment, ‘Yes, I love God with all my heart and soul’. But the question is ‘do you like God?’ ‘Like’ and ‘love’ are not the same.

The confessions of a proud Protestant

I was born and raised a Protestant (Pentecostal variety). I was taught the Bible at church, I read it at home and memorised it at my Christian school. For this I have no regrets. I am thankful for of my scriptural knowledge; it really has been ‘a lamp to my feet and a light to my path’ (Psalm 119:105). What I’m not proud of is my prejudice. For most of my life I have had an appalling attitude towards Catholics.

The wow factor

I have had many Memorable Experiences. From growing up on a farm to tripping around the world, finding 10 of them would not be difficult. What might prove harder is deciding on the order, but there are a couple of them I’m sure would make the top 5…

What is evil and who’s responsible?

What causes us humans to murder, lie, steal, cheat, covet, etc? Does the devil really make us do it as some people claim? When we say something is evil what do we mean? Are we referring to the act itself or the perpetrator of the act? A blind force or a personality? Is it external or internal?

Free-will? It’s all about love!

Some people reject free-will because they believe it undermines God’s sovereignty. The ability to choose appears to threaten the truth of Salvation being the work Christ alone. Others wish to deny free-will on the basis of fear…

Law and grace, which side are you on?

I live at and volunteer a lot of my spare time to a Teen Challenge drug rehab centre. When some people learn this they say, ‘I bet you have learnt a lot about grace’. The strange thing is I have learnt a lot more about the importance of law.

The ugly truth

There is so much to be thankful for: everything from great family and friends to meaning in life. But the most gracious thing God has done was show me the ugly truth about myself. By this I mean He showed me what a sick, depraved sinner I am. And for this precious truth I will ever be grateful. Nothing has ever had such sweet rewards…

The Cross

If Jesus’ physical pain was the most significant thing about His suffering, against the great crowd of martyrs who have died, are dying and will die, His crucifixion will fade into history as just one of many who have suffered…

Worship, music and the modern church

All our singing and CDs have not deterred us from becoming like the world around us. Never before has the western church had more music and never before has it been more depraved in its behaviour. ‘Worship’ is now a style of music instead of being a style of life.

Terms and conditions

How much was it your decision to know God? Answer – none. You can’t know God unless He lets you. Whoever has foreknowledge has the power and decides the terms and conditions of meeting…

Weakness, your greatest strength

‘Let the weak say I am strong’. But is that true? If you want a strong Olympic team you don’t pick the weak. Typically, the strong beat up the weak. History is full of stories showcasing the power of the strong. But is overpowering someone a true indication of strength?

The key to conversion

The revealed word of the Lord or ‘revelation’ is of premier importance. Without it we cannot truly know God, follow God, understand God or love God. Revelation is more than information or knowledge…

Why can’t I be a 5-point Calvinist?

The dichotomy of sovereignty and free-will and its effect on the way we view salvation is something all thinking Christians will encounter. This topic should neither be avoided, nor pushed aside as unimportant…
